Bush Administraion Readying to Pospone Election

by Linda Pascatore on 15 July 2004

According to a recent Newsweek article, the Homeland Security department has asked the Justice Department what would have to be done to give the agency the power to postpone elections in case of a terrorist attack.

This is an ugly and dangerous development. Will the agency then consider just the imminent threat of an attack sufficient to suspend our presidential elections?

First we had Bush’s “court appointment” to the presidency in 2000, which later counts revealed that Gore had won. Then it was the continued election irregularities in Florida under his brother Governor Jeb’s watch in which thousands of eligible voters are being disenfranchised (most of whom are black, poor and likely to vote democratic). Then the looming fraud involving electronic voting machines with no paper trail and no possibility of a recount.

This is the last straw. We cannot allow Congress to enable the president or the Homeland Security Department to postpone or cancel elections. This idea represents a much greater and more present danger to democratic process than any from Al Qaeda. We must stand up and defend our democracy now!
