"Talk Story Bookstore & Cafe" and "My Gallery" are Evolving

In September we did a story on a new second hand bookstore in Old Hanapepe Town. There have been some great developments at Talk Story since then, so here’s an update!

I just spend a rainy Sunday afternoon in a quaint bookstore/cafe right in Hanapepe Town. I listened to a presentation about numerology, shared some delicious cheesecake and coffee with friends, and then lounged on a sofa browsing a lovely book of photographs and quotes of wise older women.

"Talk Story Bookstore & Cafe" and "My Gallery" are located on Hanapepe Road west of the one lane bridge in Hanapepe. Ed Justus and Cynthia Powell are the friendly young couple who own and operate the business.

The cafe end of the business has expanded, and they are now serving a variety of refreshments. Decadent Flourless Chocolate Cake and Passionfruit Cheesecake with macadamia nut crust are always available. I can vouch for the cheesecake - it is one of the most delicious I’ve tasted, and I’m looking forward to a decadent chocolate experience in the near future. They also serve bagels and tuna fish sandwiches. Beverages include espresso, latte, and cappuccino coffees made to order hot, iced, or decaf. House coffee, tea, Pepsi and a daily Fruit Smoothie flavor are also available.

Talk Story stocks a fascinating variety of used books--something for everyone. The casual atmosphere, with comfortable sofas and chairs, invites browsing and lingering for coffee and conversation. The shop is filled with art, jewelry, crystals, Hawaiiana and some antiques for sale.

"My Gallery", located within the bookstore/cafe, features several area artists. There is a variety of original art, prints, and notecards by some great local artists.

Regular entertainment and community events are also featured at Talk Story Bookstore and Cafe. Every Wednesday Caylin Spear teaches an Open Studio Art Class at 4:30 pm. A Game Night for board games and table games is scheduled every Thursday beginning at 6:00 pm. Kalena performs Hawaiian music with a variety of traditional instruments Fridays from 8:00 pm to 11:00 pm. Other musicians are invited to join in the music making. Special events and lectures take place quite often, and are listed under Community Events in The Garden Island.
